The Andy Warhol Foundation has granted the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive $100,000 to put on a retrospective of painter, graffer, sculptor and and all-round designer Barry McGee | It will run from August 23rd – December 9th 2012 | McGee, an integral player in Aaron Rose’ Alleged Gallery scene with fellow artists Thomas Campbell, Ed Templeton and his late wife Margaret Kilgallen, made a name for himself in the 1980′s with his Twist tag but his art now falls in more figurative lines – expressive characters and bright graphic patterns | Writer and MoCFA curator Natasha Boas, who interviewed Chris Johanson recently for The Believer, has contributed an essay Partial and Incomplete Oral History of the Mission School to the exhibition catalogue, which will be available during the show | Says McGee: The most compelling art, to me, is a name carved into a tree | www.bampfa.berkeley.edu
